Why was it built
The Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial Bhawan Society, Chandigarh has been organizing at least three function every year namely Gaurav Diwas (13 March) when the great martyr shot dead Sir Michael O. Dwyer, in London. Shaheedi diwas on 31 July & Birthday On 26th Dec on these occasions the photos are taken and proceedings are got published in the newspapers.
- To construct memorial, Bhawans of the martyrs.
- To spread the philosophy of secularism, patriotism, expounded by the martyrs during their lifetime.
- To arrange for the preparation and pollution of the historical and biographical literature on martyrs in principal Indian languages.
- To arrange cultural and sports meet in memory of great martyrs.
- To arrange institution of learning.
- To offer prices, awards, scholarships, stipend and to give grant with a view to furthering the aims and objectives of the societies listed above and advancement of education.
- To acquire and own moveable and immovable properties for furtherance of the aims and objectives of the societies.
- Take all steps to adopt all search measures as might be deemed necessary to carry out the aforesaid aims and objectives.
The society applied for the allotment of a plot to the Estate Office, U.T Chandigarh On 19-08-1982 for establishing memorial in the name of Shaheed Udham Singh. The U.T administration raised a number of objections time and again. The attitude of U.T Administration was not sympathetic and after a lapse 19 year. The plot measuring 1002.6 Sq. Yd. Was allotted at higher rates in sector 41-b on 25-09-2001. That sight was not suitable and the society applied for change of the site. This request was accepted and a plot measuring 1997 Sq. Yd. Was allotted in sector 41-C, V.4 Road, Chandigarh on 16-01-03. Approximately a sum of Rs. 1.07 crores has been collected from the public. Out of this duration Rs. 60 Lac have been deposited as cost of land and ground rent. The balance amount has been spent on the construction of the basement and ground floor. Two stories are still to be constructed. The approximate estimated cost of the completion of this project is about Rs. 3 crores. It is worthwhile to mention here that Late Giani Teja Singh and S. Fauja Singh Thind and Sh. Nanak Chand Kamboj played a major role for allotment of plot and in the functioning of the society.
